Dr. Tarangelo earned his medical degree from Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He then went on to complete his internal medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. During his time in residency he was selected as Chief Medical Resident, and spent an additional year of training in this role where he was deeply involved in medical student and medical resident education. He then went on to complete his fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology at Yale School of Medicine/Yale New Haven Hospital where he was selected to be Chief Fellow. On graduation from fellowship he was selected to receive the Samuel Kushlan Award, awarded to the graduating fellow who exhibits excellence in clinical gastroenterology.
Dr. Tarangelo’s areas of clinical interest are general gastroenterology and hepatology including colorectal cancer screening, liver disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, GERD, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastrointestinal motility disorders. He received extensive training in liver disease during his fellowship training, and gained experience in the treatment of viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease (NASH), and cirrhosis. He is proficient in endoscopic procedures including upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, Bravo pH capsule placement, esophageal dilation, PillCam (video capsule endoscopy), percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube placement, and endoFLIP (endoscopic functional lumen imaging probe). He is also trained in interpretation of high resolution esophageal manometry, high resolution anorectal manometry, esophageal pH impedance testing.
Dr. Tarangelo emphasizes a holistic approach when evaluating and treating gastrointestinal disorders. He aims to work with his patients to develop a treatment plan that aligns the values of each patient with the most up to date medical treatments available. He is also interested in the benefits of mindfulness based stress reduction for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.
In his spare time, Dr. Tarangelo enjoys spending time with his wife, skiing, running, and hiking.
